When "Just Visiting" Turned Out to Be Something Else Entirely: An Austin Custody Cohabitation Case

custody investigation

She Had a Feeling. The Custody Agreement Had a Clause. We Had a Job to Do.

Look, custody cases are personal. There is a lot riding on them and the last thing anyone wants is to feel like they are overreacting. When our client reached out to Terrance Private Investigator and Associates, she was not acting on jealousy. She was acting on a custody agreement that had a very specific clause, and she had reason to believe it was being ignored. Her ex was not supposed to have an unapproved partner living in the home where their daughter spent time. She had been noticing things for a while. A vehicle she did not recognize at the complex every time she dropped off her daughter. A name that kept coming up. A situation that had quietly crossed a line from occasional to permanent.

She did not need us to validate her instincts. She needed us to document the reality. So that is exactly what Terrance Private Investigator and Associates did.

The Line Between Visiting and Living There Is Exactly What This Custody Investigation Was About.

Here is the thing about cohabitation cases in custody disputes: they are some of the most detail-sensitive investigations we handle. The difference between a frequent visitor and someone who actually lives there can look similar on the surface, and anyone can make the argument that a person just stops by a lot. What courts respond to is a documented pattern over time, not a single observation, and building that kind of pattern takes discipline, consistency, and experience. Our client needed us to determine whether the person of interest was genuinely residing at the subject’s apartment at The Landings Apartments in Austin, or whether the situation was something that could be explained away.

That distinction is everything in a Texas custody matter, and our investigators knew from day one exactly what kind of record needed to be built.

A Custody Investigation Cohabitation Case Built on 5 Days of Consistent, Early-Morning Coverage.

Our experience with custody and cohabitation investigations shaped every call we made on this case. We ran split surveillance periods covering early morning and afternoon through evening across 5 consecutive days, June 3 through June 7. We locked in the subject’s residence at Building 11 of The Landings Apartments, identified 3 vehicles connected to the investigation, and settled in. Every morning our investigators were on the property before the sun came up. Every evening we documented who came, who stayed, and who left. What built up over those 5 days was not a picture of someone dropping by now and then. It was a picture of someone who had a routine there.

On June 3, the person of interest’s vehicle was already parked on the property when our investigators arrived before 5:18 AM. At 6:14 AM she walked out of the subject’s building in pajamas, carrying a personal bag and a drink, and left. The subject followed out of the same building about 15 minutes later. June 4 was nearly identical. Both of them exited Building 11 within moments of each other and headed in the same direction. That afternoon our investigators documented the person of interest arriving at the residence, going inside, and coming back out later wearing a completely different outfit. By June 6 the case had taken our investigators to Urban Air Adventure Park, where the subject, the person of interest, and the child all showed up together for what was clearly the daughter’s birthday party. The person of interest came with a large blue bag and party supplies, helped set everything up, participated in the whole celebration, and was observed embracing the subject in the parking lot before they each drove away separately.

5 Nights. 1 Parking Space. The Same Vehicle Every Single Morning.

If you asked us what the single most important piece of evidence in this case was, we would tell you it was simple: the car was there every morning. On June 3, June 4, June 5, June 6, and June 7, the person of interest’s vehicle was parked in the same designated space at The Landings Apartments. Not most mornings. Every morning. Our investigators arrived before dawn each day and it was there waiting. That kind of consistency, stacked on top of the early morning building exits, the clothing changes inside the residence, the unrestricted access while the subject was away, and a full birthday celebration with the child, left no credible alternative explanation on the table.

Courts respond to patterns, not one-off moments. This custody investigation cohabitation case in Austin TX gave us 5 consecutive days of an undeniable pattern, and Terrance Private Investigator and Associates built every piece of it with the courtroom in mind from the jump.

Our Client Walked Into Her Attorney's Office With 5 Days of Documented Evidence.

When Terrance Private Investigator and Associates handed over the final report, our client had something she had not had before: a complete, timestamped, professionally documented record covering 5 consecutive days of surveillance. Overnight vehicle presence, early morning building exits, clothing changes, unrestricted residential access, family outings, birthday celebration participation, and confirmed physical affection between the subject and the person of interest. All of it in one report, all of it ready to hand to an attorney.

Her legal team had exactly what they needed to address the custody agreement violation in court. The documentation did not just support her position. It made her position undeniable. She came to us with a feeling she could not prove. She left with a report she did not have to explain.
