How to request a welfare check in Dallas, guidance from a licensed Texas investigator

Overview

You have called. You have texted. Maybe you have even driven by. And still, nothing. When someone you love goes quiet, your mind goes straight to the worst, and the not-knowing becomes its own kind of pain.

If you believe the person is in immediate danger right now, call 911. We can be there in hours. Emergency services can be there in minutes, and they can enter a home when we cannot. And if you are frightened that someone may hurt themselves, you can call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, about someone you are worried about. It is not only for the person in crisis. A counselor will talk through what you are seeing and what to do next. Most people do not know that, and it is often the right call before ours.

For everything short of an emergency, a wellness check is straightforward: we locate the person you are worried about and confirm, in person, that they are safe. An aging parent who stopped picking up. An adult child who has pulled away. A friend who has gone dark after a hard stretch. Over 17+ years and more than 800 closed cases, our licensed investigators have learned that the hardest part is rarely the visit. It is finding someone whose address nobody in the family actually has anymore.

You do not have to carry the worry alone, and you do not have to wait it out. Tell us who you are worried about, and we will go find out.

Who We Help

Families and individuals come to us for a wellness check when they cannot reach someone and need to know they are safe:

  • Adult children worried about an aging parent
  • Parents of an adult child who has gone silent
  • Siblings and extended family who have lost contact
  • Friends who sense something is wrong
  • Caregivers checking on a client or dependent
  • People out of state or overseas who cannot get there themselves
  • Families whose police welfare check came back with nothing
  • Attorneys and guardians confirming a person’s welfare
  • Court-appointed guardians and conservators
  • Estate and trust representatives
  • Employers concerned about an employee who has gone unreachable
  • Anyone who has called, texted, and heard nothing back
  •

How We Help

What a wellness check involves depends on how much you know and how far away the person is. Ours can include:

  • Locating the person’s current address or whereabouts
  • A discreet, in-person visit to confirm they are safe
  • A welfare assessment of how they appear and their surroundings
  • Confirming they are not in immediate danger or distress
  • Gentle, respectful contact when the situation calls for it
  • Neighbor and building contact where appropriate
  • Hospital, shelter, and custody checks when someone cannot be found
  • Vehicle and residence observation
  • Coordinating with local authorities if an emergency is found
  • Referral to Adult Protective Services where neglect or exploitation is suspected
  • A clear written report of what we observed
  • Photo documentation where appropriate and lawful
  • Follow-up checks if you need ongoing peace of mind
  • Nationwide wellness checks

Reasons Families Request a Wellness Check

Our wellness checks are carried out by licensed private investigators who know how to find people and how to walk into a delicate moment carefully. People reach out for all kinds of reasons, but they share one: they need to know someone they love is okay, and they need to know now.

In our experience the call usually comes after two other things have already failed. The family has tried everything they can think of, and either the police could not help because no crime was suspected, or an officer did a drive-by, got no answer, and closed it. Neither of those means the person is fine. It means nobody has actually laid eyes on them yet.

Families commonly contact us for:

  • Sudden, unexplained silence
  • An elderly parent living alone
  • A loved one struggling with their health or mental health
  • Signs of self-neglect or isolation
  • A relationship that ended badly
  • Concern about a caregiver or undue influence
  • An adult child who cut off contact
  • A missed check-in, birthday, or holiday
  • Worry after a scam or financial exploitation
  • A person with dementia or memory loss
  • Someone who moved away and went quiet
  • A police welfare check that produced no answer
  • A family member overseas or several states away
  • Confirming welfare before a legal or estate matter proceeds
  • A neighbor or landlord who raised a concern
  • A gut feeling that something is not right
  •

Common Situations We Investigate:

  • Your mother has not answered her phone in four days and lives alone.
  • An adult child stopped responding after a hard stretch and you are frightened.
  • Police did a drive-by, got no answer, and closed the call.
  • You live out of state and cannot get there yourself.
  • A parent’s new caregiver or friend has started answering their phone.
  • A relative with dementia moved and you are not certain where.
  • Someone went quiet after a scam or a financial loss.
  • A neighbor mentioned they have not seen your family member in weeks.
  • You need welfare confirmed before an estate or guardianship matter proceeds.
  • You are not sure whether you are overreacting and you need someone to look.

If any of these sound familiar, call and we will tell you honestly what we can do and how fast. That includes telling you when the answer is 911 rather than us. And if you are sitting there wondering whether you are overreacting, you are not. That last item on the list is the reason a large share of our wellness checks get requested, and almost none of those families regret making the call.

How It Works

  • 1

Tell Us Who You're Worried About

You share who we are checking on and everything you know: a name, an address, a phone number, the last time you spoke, who else they are in contact with. No detail is too small, and the ones that feel irrelevant are often where we start.
  • 2

    We Locate Them

Our investigators trace the person’s current whereabouts even when your information is old or incomplete. This is the part families cannot do themselves and it is usually where the delay actually sits.
  • 3

    We Check In Person

We go to them and confirm with our own eyes that they are safe, discreetly and without causing alarm. No patrol car in the driveway, no scene for the neighbors.
  • 4

    We Handle What We Find

If everything is fine, you hear from us immediately. If we find an emergency, we act and coordinate with local authorities on the spot. If we see signs of neglect or exploitation, we will tell you and point you to Adult Protective Services in that jurisdiction.
  • 5

    You Get Real Answers

You receive a clear account of how the person is doing and what we observed, documented in writing whenever you need it for family, doctors, or a court.

Frequently Asked Questions

Asking for help with a wellness check comes with questions about how fast we can move, what we can do, and what happens next. Here are the ones families ask us most.

Sometimes, and we will tell you when. If you believe someone is unconscious, injured, or in immediate danger behind a locked door, call 911. Police can force entry and we cannot, and in that situation nothing else matters. Where we help is everything around that: locating someone when nobody has a current address, going out of state, going back a second and third time, handling it without a patrol car in the driveway, and taking the case at all when no crime is suspected and the department has already closed it out.

Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is available around the clock and it is for people worried about someone else, not only for the person in crisis. A counselor will help you think through what you are seeing and what to do. You can reach them at 988lifeline.org or by dialing 988 from any phone. If the danger is immediate, call 911 first.

Often the same day. Tell us where they are, or where you last knew them to be, and we will tell you honestly how fast we can have someone there.

That is the most common version of this call and it is the part we are actually built for. Skip tracing and records research usually produce a current address even when the family's information is years old.

That is your call and we will discuss it before we go. Often the visit can be handled without naming you at all. One thing worth saying plainly: if the person is a competent adult who chose to cut contact, we will confirm they are safe and we will tell you that, but whether their location is shared with you is their decision, not ours. In our experience knowing they are okay is what most families actually needed.

Aging parents are the most common request, but we check on adult children, siblings, friends, clients, and employees. Age is not the criterion, unreachability is.

We act. If it is a medical emergency we call 911 from the doorstep and stay until help arrives. If we see signs of self-neglect, exploitation, or an unsafe living situation, we document it and tell you immediately, and we can point you to Adult Protective Services in that jurisdiction. The Eldercare Locator, a free national service, can connect families to local aging and protective services anywhere in the country.

A clear account of how the person appeared, their surroundings, and anything of concern, documented in writing when you need it for family, a doctor, or a court.
