Dallas Wellness Check Investigations

If someone you care about has stopped answering and you are three states away, or twenty minutes away and afraid of what you might find, the waiting is its own kind of awful. If you believe they are in immediate danger, call 911 now. If it is not that, a Dallas wellness check sends somebody to lay eyes on them and tell you the truth.

Private Investigator Training

Overview

If you are reading this, you have probably already called several times, left a message you have re-read since, and told yourself you are overreacting. You are almost certainly not. People who worry about a parent or a sibling this specifically are usually noticing something real.

A Dallas wellness check is a short, careful piece of work. An investigator attends the address, establishes whether the person is there and how they appear, speaks with them where they are willing, and reports back the same day with what was actually observed. Not what we assume, not a reassuring guess.

Across 17+ years and more than 800 closed cases, the pattern we see most often is a family separated by distance and by pride. The parent who insists everything is fine and has stopped picking up. Most of these checks end with somebody being all right, and the relief of hearing that from a person who actually stood at the door is worth more than another unanswered call.

We will be honest about when you should not be paying us. The police perform welfare checks at no cost, and if there is any indication of immediate danger they are the right call. Adult Protective Services investigates suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of older and disabled adults, also at no cost. We will point you to both on the first call when that is what your situation needs.

We work Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton and Rockwall counties as one operating area, and nationwide through vetted local investigators when family is spread further. See our Dallas private investigator page for coverage.

Wellness Checks in Dallas, and What They Are Not

A wellness check is for somebody whose whereabouts you know, or could know, but whose wellbeing you cannot confirm. You have an address. What you do not have is any idea whether they are all right.

That is a different problem from a missing person, where nobody knows where the person is at all, and we keep the two separate because they are worked completely differently. If your situation is actually the second one, see our Dallas missing persons investigations page, and we will tell you plainly on the first call if that is where you belong.

It is also not a medical or psychiatric assessment. Our investigators are not clinicians and will not offer a view on somebody’s health, capacity or state of mind. What they can do is describe accurately what they observed, which is frequently what a doctor, a social worker or a family needs in order to act.

Most of this work is quiet and unremarkable, and that is the point. A knock, a conversation, and a phone call telling you your mother is fine and was watching television.

Reasons Families Request a Dallas Wellness Check

Families rarely call at the first missed phone call. They call when the pattern breaks. The parent who always rings on Sunday and did not. The neighbour who mentioned the post is piling up.

At Terrance Private Investigator & Associates we go and look, then tell you exactly what was there. We do not reassure you to make the call easier, and we do not dramatise to justify the invoice.

Common Situations We Investigate

  • An elderly parent has stopped answering the phone and lives alone.
  • You live out of state and cannot get there quickly.
  • A relative has been discharged from hospital and nobody has heard from them.
  • Someone has withdrawn after a bereavement, a divorce or a job loss.
  • You suspect a new acquaintance or carer may be exploiting a vulnerable relative.
  • The police attended once and you need ongoing eyes rather than a single visit.
  • A guardian or trustee needs periodic documented confirmation of wellbeing.
  • You need a record of the person’s condition for a court or a care decision.

How It Works

  • 1

    Confidential Consultation

We start with what you have noticed. When you last spoke, what was said, what has changed in their routine, who else has tried. If what you describe sounds like an emergency, we will tell you to call 911 while we are still on the phone.
  • 2

    Planning the Visit

We agree the address, the timing and the approach. Whether the person should be told who sent us, whether photographs are wanted, and what you need to do with the report afterwards. A check meant for a doctor is scoped differently from one meant to settle a worry.
  • 3

    Attendance and Contact

An investigator attends in plain clothes and an unmarked vehicle, knocks, and speaks with the person where they are willing. Where nobody answers, we note exterior condition, vehicle presence and accumulated post, and make neighbour enquiries only where appropriate.
  • 4

    Same-Day Reporting

You hear from us as soon as the investigator leaves, because waiting for an email is not something a worried family should have to do. The written report follows with the date, time, whether contact was made, and a factual account of what was observed.
  • 5

    What Comes Next

We walk you through what was seen and what it does and does not tell you. Sometimes that is a recurring arrangement, sometimes a referral to Adult Protective Services or the police, and sometimes nothing at all because your mother is fine.

Why Choose Us

6

Police, Adult Protective Services, or a Private Investigator?

Call the police first, and understand that it costs nothing. This is the section other firms leave out and it is the most useful one on the page.

If you believe somebody is in immediate danger, dial 911. If it is not an emergency but you are genuinely worried, contact the agency covering the address and request a welfare check. In DFW that may be Dallas Police, or Plano, Frisco, Irving, Garland or a county sheriff’s office depending on where they live. An officer will attend. They can force entry where there is reason to believe someone is at risk, they can call an ambulance, and they can act in ways no private investigator may.

If your concern is abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of an older or disabled adult, Texas Adult Protective Services investigates, and their statewide line is 1-800-252-5400. That is also free, and they have powers we do not.

So where does a private investigator fit? In the space around those. Police attend once and report to the caller in general terms, and they will not return weekly. They do not provide a written record you can hand to a doctor, a sibling or a court. They cannot be scheduled. And for a family that simply needs somebody to confirm a parent is eating and the house is warm, a patrol car outside can feel heavy-handed and damage a relationship that was already fragile.

What we offer is a documented, scheduled, proportionate check by somebody who will describe exactly what they saw. Terrance Private Investigator & Associates is licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety under License #A30913601. We cannot force entry, cannot compel anybody to speak with us, and will tell you plainly when your situation belongs with 911 or APS rather than with us.

7

What Does a Dallas Wellness Check Cost?

Most firms will not put anything about cost on the page. For a family already anxious about a parent, that silence is its own problem.

A single Dallas wellness check on a known address is straightforward work and we price it as a flat case rate, agreed before anything happens. Most are completed the same day or the next, and you get a verbal report as soon as the investigator leaves rather than waiting for paperwork.

Cost moves for three reasons. Distance is the first, and DFW makes it real: an address in Frisco or out toward Rockwall is a different afternoon from one inside the loop. Repeat attendance is the second, since somebody who is out on the first visit needs a second, and we would rather return than report an empty house as a finding. Recurring arrangements are the third, and they are usually cheaper per visit than one-off calls.

Where the concern is exploitation rather than wellbeing, the work is larger and quoted differently, because establishing who has been visiting, what has changed financially and who now holds authority is an investigation rather than a visit.

We will also tell you when not to spend. If what you need is a single emergency response, that is 911 and it is free. If you suspect neglect or exploitation of an older adult, Adult Protective Services investigates at no cost.

8

Long-Distance Caregiving and Recurring Checks

This is where most of our wellness check work actually comes from, and it is the part nobody plans for.

An adult child lives in another state. The parent is in Plano or Richardson, independent, proud, and increasingly hard to read over the phone. Everything is fine is the answer to every question. Visits happen twice a year and each one brings a small shock, because decline does not announce itself between Christmases.

A recurring check changes that arithmetic. An investigator attends on an agreed schedule, monthly or fortnightly, has a short conversation, notes what has changed, and sends a written record. Over four or five visits that record becomes genuinely valuable, because it shows a trend rather than a snapshot. Families use it to have a difficult conversation with a sibling who disagrees, to give a doctor something concrete, or simply to stop guessing.

In our experience the checks that work best are the ones the person knows about. Where you are comfortable with it, we tell them plainly that their daughter asked us to call in, and most people, once the initial irritation passes, find that easier than being telephoned three times a day by a worried adult child.

Where you would rather the visit were discreet, we can do that too, and we will discuss honestly what each approach costs in terms of the relationship.

9

Working With Guardians, Trustees and Elder Law Attorneys

A meaningful share of this work comes through professionals rather than families, and it runs differently.

Guardians and trustees are frequently required to demonstrate reasonable steps in respect of a ward or beneficiary, and a dated third-party record of wellbeing is considerably stronger than an entry in a file. Elder law attorneys use documented checks where capacity or undue influence is contested. Care coordinators use them where a client has disengaged and the service has no mandate to attend.

We work to the scope you set and report on your schedule. Reports are factual and observational, and they deliberately stop short of conclusions about health, capacity or state of mind, because our investigators are not clinicians and a report that oversteps is one that gets torn apart when it matters.

We will not enter a property, remove anybody, intervene in a family dispute, or take instructions to check on somebody who has told us they do not want contact. See our attorneys and legal professionals page.

10

What You Receive After the Check

People rarely ask this before they call, and for this service it matters more than most, because the report is often shown to somebody else.

You get a verbal report as soon as the investigator leaves the address, because a family waiting for an email is a family still worrying. The written report follows, giving the date and time of attendance, the address, whether contact was made, and a factual description of what was observed. Where contact was made we record what the person said, in their words rather than paraphrased.

Exterior and property observations are included where relevant, along with vehicle presence, whether post had accumulated, and anything a neighbour volunteered. Photographs are included only where you asked for them and where taking them was appropriate.

The report also records what could not be established. If nobody answered and a neighbour had not seen them for a week, that is what it says. We do not soften an unclear result into a reassuring one, and we do not inflate a quiet afternoon into a concern.

Everything is written so a doctor, a sibling, a guardian or a court can read it without needing us to explain it.

11

What Not to Do Before You Call

By the time most people call us they have already tried several things. A few of them make a Dallas wellness check harder or make the situation worse.

Do not wait because you are worried about overreacting. This is the most common regret we hear. If you believe somebody is in immediate danger, call 911. A police welfare check costs nothing and no officer will think less of you for asking.

Do not send a relative who is already in conflict with them. A visit from the family member somebody has been avoiding is the fastest way to get a door closed and a phone switched off for another month.

Do not turn up unannounced with an ultimatum. Independence is what most older adults are protecting, and a conversation that starts with moving out will end the discussion rather than open it.

Do not assume silence means the worst. A meaningful share of the checks we run find somebody entirely fine who had changed their number or stopped answering a phone they find difficult to use.

Do write down what you have noticed. Dates of missed calls, what was said in the last conversation, changes in routine, and anything a neighbour mentioned. It shapes the visit and is useful later if a doctor asks.

12

Discretion and Respecting Their Dignity

Discretion in a wellness check is less about secrecy than about dignity, and getting it wrong causes real harm.

The person being checked on is an adult with their own view of the situation, and in most cases they have done nothing except decline to answer a telephone. Our investigators attend in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles, do not announce their business to neighbours, and do not discuss why they are there with anybody except the person themselves. We do not create a scene at somebody’s front door.

Where the person is willing, we say plainly who asked us to come, because a family member who cares enough to arrange a visit is not something to hide. Where somebody makes clear they do not want contact, we record that and we leave. A competent adult is entitled to be left alone, and no client instruction changes that.

On your side, the ordinary risks apply. Other relatives may repeat what you tell them, and a shared inbox is not private. We will agree how the report reaches you, and we will tell you honestly if we think what you are asking for would embarrass someone unnecessarily.

If you are weighing what to do about someone in Dallas who has stopped answering, a confidential consultation costs you nothing and may save you from a decision that is difficult to undo. Contact us at 214-838-8004, email getanswers@piterrance.com, or read more on our Dallas wellness check investigations page. When you are ready, you can start a case online. If you believe there is immediate danger, call 911 first.

13

Next Steps

If you believe someone is in immediate danger, call 911 before anything else. If it is not that, a confidential consultation costs nothing and we can usually attend the same day. We will also tell you honestly when the right answer is a free police welfare check or a call to Adult Protective Services rather than an invoice from us.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Trust is most of this decision and we know it. See what Dallas and DFW clients have shared about working with Terrance Private Investigator & Associates. Rated 5.0 on Google with 600+ verified reviews.

What areas do we serve across Dallas and DFW?

Wellness checks do not stay inside one city here. A parent in Plano, a sibling in Arlington and an aunt out toward Rockwall are three different drives and three different afternoons. We cover Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton and Rockwall counties, and we work nationwide through vetted local investigators when family is spread further than Texas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people who contact us about a Dallas wellness check have never done this before and are worried they are making too much of it. You are almost certainly not. Here are the honest answers.

The police, if there is any chance of immediate danger, and it costs nothing. Dial 911 for an emergency or contact the agency covering the address for a non-emergency check. An investigator is right when you need a documented, scheduled or repeated check, or a written record for a doctor, a sibling or a court.

A single check on a known address is a flat case rate agreed before anything happens, and most are completed the same day or the next. Distance across DFW, a repeat visit where nobody was home, and recurring arrangements all affect the figure.

No. Only law enforcement can, and only where there is reason to believe somebody is at risk. If our attendance suggests that, we tell you immediately, advise you to call the police, and give them what we observed. We can also attend again at a different time.

That is your decision and we discuss it before attending. In our experience most checks go better when the person is told plainly that a family member asked us to call in. Where you would rather it were discreet we can do that, and we will be honest about the cost to the relationship.

We record that they declined, note what we could observe from the door, and leave. A competent adult is entitled to be left alone and no instruction changes that. We report exactly what happened and do not return repeatedly.

It depends where they live. Dallas Police inside the city, or Plano, Frisco, Irving, Garland or a county sheriff elsewhere in DFW. If you are unsure, call any of them. Welfare check requests get routed rather than refused.

Yes, and recurring checks are some of the most useful work we do. A dated series of reports shows a trend rather than a snapshot, which is what families and doctors actually need. Schedules are agreed in advance and are usually cheaper per visit.

If somebody needs urgent help we call emergency services from the doorstep, before we call you. Where we see indications of neglect or exploitation of an older or disabled adult, we tell you and point you to Adult Protective Services, who investigate at no cost.
